HISTORY

“There is no pleasure in this or the other world equal to the joy of being helpful to those around you”

- Thirukkural

Anandam is a Registered Charitable Trust formed in the year 1995 for the cause and care of elders with the avowed objective of being of help to them. The trust had a modest programme of helping elders requiring help and rehabilitating them in some Homes in Chennai during the formative years .In the year 2003 the offer of a house in Lenin Nagar at Ambattur by a benevolent couple free of rent prompted the Trustees to start a Old Age Home with just 3 residents..

From the beginning the Home had a very good patronage from well wishers and demand for accommodation started pouring in and we were compelled to take 2 more houses on rent and the number of inmates got increased to 20. As the request for accommodation swelled to staggering numbers and it touched 100, the Trustees thought of expanding the living space to cater to more number of deserving persons.

After a long search we were able to identify a 15 ground land in Gangai Nagar at Kallikuppam and the same was registered in the name of the Trust. This place has got a very good water table because of the proximity of Red Hills lake on one side and Korattur lake on the other. Even in the worst summer we have got water in the well at a depth of about 15 feet and the quality of water is very good. The place is easily accessible from the Ambattur – Red Hills road with 5 minutes walking distance from Kallikuppam bus stop with all facilities nearby.

We conducted bhoomi pooja in October 2004 and the Trustees had a brilliant idea of offering obeisance to Mother Earth and we embarked on a marathon work to execute mega Rangoli and Kolam in the land prior to starting construction. The red letter day in the annals of Anandam was on 30-04-2005 when 60 lady volunteers from different walks of life and different age groups joined to produce a brilliant spectacle of colours in Rangoli and produced the largest Rangoli in the world extending to an area of 9320 sq.ft. and we are justifiably proud that this won the Guinness World Record. The theme for the Rangoli was FORGING AHEAD WITH ELEPHANTINE STRENGTH.Simultaneously we did a mega Kolam of an area 12800 sq.ft. with 40 ladies in the age group of 8 to 80 years. But with our best efforts we were not able to get certification from Guinness. The theme for Kolam was LIGHTING LONELY LIVES. The Logo of Anandam has been artfully designed by the veteran artist Sri Gopulu.

To bring this noble, charitable service into limelight, Managing Trustee and Trustees thought of doing something out of the ordinary, and this set in motion the idea of making a Guinness World Record (GWR) Attempt. Prompted by helping friends, it was decided to make an attempt for creating the largest RANGOLI and KOLAM pattern. With help coming from all quarters, the attempt was made on 30th April 2005, in the presence of 3 eminent witnesses/judges.

Enclosed are some of the evidences in the form of photos, videos and press clippings. We are happy that the RANGOLI pattern made by volunteers of ANANDAM has been adjudged as the largest in area in the world and Guinness World Record authorities have authenticated the same and issued the certificate to that effect.

Anandam thanks Guinness authorities for having given this opportunity.
